講義概要/Course description
The South as Reality and in Fiction: From Gone with the Wind to the Dixie Chicks

In this ONLINE semester, we will read from classic nostalgia fiction of the so-called “moonlight and magnolia” South, such as Gone with the Wind and “Song of the South,” considering too their film versions and the controversies that have followed these works up until the present time. Tennessee Williams's Streetcar Named Desire will allow us to interrogate the South as fantasy along gender and class lines. We will conclude by considering the parodies and revisions Old South nostalgia has spawned, including Alice Randall’s The Wind Done Gone. We will not neglect, of course,“tragic mulatto” tales, minstrel shows, vaudeville, African American writers and entertainers, Elvis Presley and other 20th-century popular culture figures.
Throughout the year, we will define the region of the South as it has evolved historically and geographically so as to discuss its cultural currency for the United States at large. Leigh Ann Duck calls it “the nation's region” and certainly the South, more than any other part of the country, has stood out for its rebellion in the Civil War and the “Lost Cause” that followed its transition from Old South to New South; however, it has also functioned as a necessary foil and reality check on the nation's own fantasy of unity and progress imagined as somehow outside of a history of slavery imagined as belonging solely to the South.

達成目標/Course objectives
The ONLINE class has three main objectives:(1) To gain foundational knowledge of Southern regionalist literature in its historical context in English; (2) To improve reading, writing, speaking (as much as possible), and listening skills in English as a result of intensive study of materials solely in the target language of English; (3) To foster critical thinking and writing skills through comparative analysis of texts, close reading of literal and figurative language use, and short writing tasks.

NB: The course will adjust and adapt to the real-time demands of our educational environment and the individual needs of students as classes proceed and the professor identifies how best to meet the objectives of the course
